So far in this series, we’ve talked about Kim Kardashian makeup and Ashley Benson makeup. This week, we’re moving on to another personal favorite of mine, Miss. Zooey Deschanel. I’ve loved this lady since I saw her in Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy and since then, my love has only grown stronger. While I haven’t fallen in love with New Girl like I expected to, I love Zooey too much to let that impact my feelings for her. This week’s tutorial will walk you through how to get Zooey’s look quickly, easily and inexpensively. It’s going to be a lot of fun, so let’s get started.
Zooey Deschanel Makeup: The Step By Step Guide
I’m going to keep this tutorial pretty simple. Instead of choosing a specific Zooey Deschanel look, I’m going to go with a more all around look. To be honest, Zooey doesn’t really change up her hair and makeup very often, preferring what I like to call the “Classic Zooey” over more elaborate hair and makeup styles. Zooey’s basic look is great because it can work for an every day sort of look or it can work for a more formal event. Okay, enough explanation. Let’s get to the tutorial.
Zooey Deschanel Makeup: Get Zooey’s Flawless Skin and Rosy Cheeks
Zooey always has flawless looking skin but rest assured, there are likely some flaws under her makeup. She masks any imperfections well though so that’s where we’re going to start. A good concealer and foundation are musts for this look. To get Zooey’s flawless looking skin and those pretty rosy cheeks, you’ll need
- Foundation brush.
- Pink blush
Step One: Apply Concealer.
I always like to apply concealer first because applying foundation over concealer helps set the concealer and keep it in place. For Zooey’s look, you’re going to apply your foundation and concealer as you normally would but you want a very specific kind of foundation. Look for a high coverage matte foundation. Although not a true matte foundation product, I like using e.l.f. Studio Flawless Finish Foundation in Porcelain. It’s a bit more expensive than other e.l.f. products at $6.00 but I can’t argue with the results. It offers great coverage and a beautiful, long lasting semi-matte finish. Whenever I’m going a Zooey inspired look, this is the foundation I use. If you want to go for true matte and are willing to spend a little dough, I’d highly recommend NARS Sheer Matte Foundation. It’s brilliant stuff but a little out of the average woman’s price range at $42.00. I did splurge on a bottle of this stuff and it’s worth every single penny.
Now, for that really fresh faced, clear skinned look, you’re going to want to apply your foundation to your entire face. Start in the center of your face and blend out using your foundation brush. It is extremely important that you take a few moments to really make sure you have everything blended well. You don’t want any lines or any areas that appear to have more foundation than others. This is especially important over blemishes. If you put more concealer or more foundation on your blemishes, you’ll highlight them more than hide them.
Step Two: Apply Blush.
Zooey doesn’t really pay too much attention to contouring, at least not in the traditional way. She keeps her look very fresh and very youthful but skipping typical products like bronzer which, although great for contouring, can age a look dramatically. Instead, Zooey used a pink cream blush and applies it to the apples of her cheeks, blending it outward toward the sides of her face. You want to blend in a sort of upward direction out from the apples, moving in the direction of your temples. You can use a powder blush, but cream blush offers more vibrant, natural looking color that lasts a bit longer than powder blush. Again, you can’t go wrong with e.l.f. I use e.l.f. Studio Cream Blush in Flirt. It runs about $6.00 a pot, much less expensive than some of the other cream blushes on the market but every bit as good.
Zooey Deschanel Makeup: Get Zooey’s Bright Doll Eyes
Zooey’s eyes always pop and while that has a lot to do with her beautiful blue eyes, blue eyes aren’t necessary to pull off this look. To get Zooey’s bright eyes, you’ll need:
- Peach eye shadow
- Medium brown eye shadow
- Blending brush
- Black liquid eyeliner
- Black eye shadow
- Flat makeup brush
- Black eyeliner pencil
- Pink eyeliner pencil
- Black waterproof mascara
Step One: Apply eye shadow primer.
If you’ve gone through my Kim Kardashian makeup tutorial and my Ashley Benson makeup tutorial (or even just read any of my eye makeup tips up until now), you know how I feel about primer. If you’re new around here, I’ll keep it short. Eye shadow primer is important. Every woman should have a decent primer in her makeup bag. Primer keeps your shadow in place, helping to prevent that color from melting into a greasy smudge in the crease of your eye so, as always, we’re going to apply our primer before we even touch our shadow.
Step Two: Apply peach eye shadow.
We’re going to take our peach eye shadow and sweep it over the entire lid. We’re also going to add a little extra to the inside corner of the eye to brighten it up a little bit.
Step Three: Apply medium brown eye shadow.
We’re going to be using our medium brown eye shadow as a mid-tone color so we’re just going to start by applying a little bit of this color to the outside corner of the eye. Work the color into and above the crease to form a sort of sideways V on the outer corner of the lid. This brings out the lid and helps set off the other colors we’ll be using. Carry the color all the way across the crease.
Step Four: Blend.
Take your blending brush and blend your color anywhere you notice harsh lines. In the end, you should have a natural looking transition between your two colors and there should be no noticeable lines.
Step Five: Apply black liquid eyeliner.
I know there are women out there who are a little nervous about liquid eyeliner but it really is a must for Zooey’s bright eyes. The bold, crisp line liquid liner offers is unmatched by any other type of liner. If you need a little advice on using liquid liner, I offer a few helpful tips for properly applying liquid liner in this article. To apply your liquid liner for Zooey’s bright eyed look, you’re going to start with a very thin line of liner at the roots of your lashes. Thicken this line slowly and gradually. It’s very easy to mess this part up and you don’t want to have to start over. You want the thickest part of the line to be directly above your pupil. Taper the line up slightly at the outer corner to the line follows the natural curve of your lashes. Don’t take it too far out or you’ll wind up with the cat eye look – a great look, sure, but not the one we’re going for here. This gives your eye a bit of a round shape similar to what we would do if we were going for a doll-like look.
Step Six: Apply black eye shadow.
Applying black eye shadow over black liquid liner is a great little trick I just recently picked up. It not only helps keep the liquid liner in place but it also helps correct any little mistakes you may have made while applying the liner. The end result? A beautiful, smooth line. All we’re going to do here is put a bit of black shadow to the tip of the flat brush and apply it directly over the eyeliner. Make sure your liquid liner has dried first!
Step Seven: Apply black eyeliner pencil.
With the black shadow in place, we’re going to take a black eyeliner pencil and apply it to the upper waterline. This is the area directly below your lashes. If you’ve never applied eyeliner to the upper waterline before you might have a little difficulty with this one but you will get the hang of it.
Step Eight: Apply mascara.
Mascara is vital in pulling off Zooey’s bright eyed look. After you’ve applied the black pencil to the upper waterline, you’re going to coat on the mascara to your upper lashes. Make sure you give the mascara a few moments to dry between coats to avoid clumping. You can also avoid clumping by working the wand from side to side as you coat your lashes from root to tip. Apply a little more mascara to your bottom lashes. Although generally women with short lashes should avoid black mascara on the bottom lashes, decide what’s best for you based on how you feel you look.
Step Nine: Apply pink eyeliner.
You don’t want a bright pink eyeliner for this look (or most looks really). Instead, you want a pretty pale pink color. We’re going to take that pale pink liner and apply it to the lower water line. This brightens up the whole eye and really gives a beautiful, balanced look.
Zooey Deschanel Makeup: Get Zooey’s Pretty Pink Pout
Zooey likes to match her lipstick to her blush which really gives the entire look a more natural, pulled together look. While it’s fairly difficult to find a lipstick and blush that match perfectly, you should have little trouble finding a close enough match to pull the look off. To get Zooey’s pretty pink pout, you’ll need:
- Pale pink lipstick
Step One: Apply your lipstick.
This one is pretty easy, ladies. Apply your lipstick. One or two swipes should do it. Zooey doesn’t wear a whole lot of lipstick so you really don’t want to overdo it, even with a pale pink color.
Step Two: Blot.
Instead of just pressing your lips together to blot your lipstick, use your ring finger to dab the color and blot it that way. This gives you a lovely, even look.
Zooey Deschanel Makeup: A Few Closing Words
In lieu of doing a Zooey Deschanel hair tutorial for this piece (I have a whole separate Zooey hair article, watch for that to appear here on FAHV soon), I wanted to take a moment or two of offer up some general Zooey Deschanel makeup tips. Zooey’s eye makeup is almost always accentuated with highlighter and false lashes. I didn’t include those things in this tutorial because I really wanted to offer a more everyday sort of look. If you want to add false lashes and a highlighter, you certainly can. In addition, don’t be afraid to play around with color. Just because Zooey keeps things basic, doesn’t mean you have to. While this look is inspired by Zooey, in the end it is still your look. Try different things and experiment to find the look that works best for you. Finally, a quote from Miss. Deschanel herself:
“I don’t know why femininity should be associated with weakness. Women should be free to express who they are without thinking I need to act like a man or I need to tone it down to be successful. That’s a very good way to keep women down.”
And that, my friends, is why I love Zooey so much. Okay, so that’s if for another celebrity makeup tutorial. Next week, we’ll be featuring Taylor Swift – one of my favorite young style divas of the moment. Make sure you come back for that next Thursday. Until then, feel free to request tutorials for your favorite celebrities and I’ll do my best to oblige. Just drop a name in the comments section and I’ll do my best to oblige. Thanks for reading and I’ll see you next week!
