These days, when a woman wants to take a little time to pamper herself, she may feel as if her options are limited. Spa days or cocktails with the girls at some fancy restaurant or trendy nightclub just may not be in the budget. There are still lots of options out there if you’re willing to get a little creative. It is possible to pamper yourself without spending a lot of money. While some of the entries on this list may seem a bit unconventional, all are great ways to pamper yourself without breaking the bank.
10: Tackle A Home Project
We’re not talking about remodeling the bathroom, kitchen or bedroom here. Those things are not only expensive but also time consuming and stressful. A lot can go wrong and the goal here is to reduce stress, not create more. Instead, try organizing a closet, cleaning out a fridge or tackling some other home project you’ve been meaning to get to but haven’t had time to do. In truth, the time is probably there but you may be spending it doing other, less productive things. Set the DVR to record your favorite shows and get busy with those project. Doesn’t sound like pampering yourself? Just wait to see how much better you feel after you complete a project and have it out of the way. When you’re all done, settle in with a snack and catch up on the TV you missed.
09: Take Up Yoga (or Pilates)
Getting exercise may not feel like pampering yourself at first but trust me, both Yoga and Pilates are great for the mind, body and soul and can leave you feeling refreshed and relaxed more than any day at the spa, especially if you stick with it. I prefer Yoga but the choice is really up to you. It’s also something you can do from the comfort of your own home so you don’t have to worry too much about trying to work time for a little workout into your schedule. It’s a great way to unwind after a long day and also helps to build long, lean muscles at the same time.
08: Start a Garden
Live in an apartment building without a yard to call your own? No problem. You can might be surprised how much you can actually grow in an apartment. Although digging in dirt might not sound like the ideal way to pamper yourself, gardening is a great way to relax. If you opt to grow vegetables, you can also save yourself a little money on your grocery bill which will help ease any financial stress you may be feeling. Gardening gives you something positive to focus your mind on and let me tell you this, there is no better tasting vegetable than a vegetable picked fresh from your very own garden.
07: An Arts and Crafts Project
Art is soothing for the soul and can be a surprisingly great way to pamper yourself without spending a lot of money. It’s also an option a lot of women don’t think about right away. Here’s the thing about tackling an art project though. You have to go into it with realistic expectations of what you can actually get out of it. You probably won’t get a masterpiece the first time you pick up a paintbrush. Even so, the feeling of accomplishment you get when you finish your first art project can’t be beat, even if it didn’t turn out quite the way you expected. Keep going with it. You will improve. If you didn’t enjoy the process, try a new medium. If painting isn’t your deal, try knitting, crocheting or beading. You might be surprised by what you can create.
06: Take a Class
All too often, women think about “pamper yourself” days and think it has to be something geared solely toward the physical but that isn’t always the case. If you’ve always had an interest in learning to do something, taking a class to learn can be a great way to pamper yourself. Your mind needs it just as much as your body. Many community centers and things of that nature in towns and cities around the country offer excellent beginner classes on a wide variety of subjects. You also might be able to find what your looking for online. Classes are often fairly inexpensive (sometimes free) and can be a great way to learn about something you’re interested in.
05: Candlelit Bubble Bath
Candlelit bubble baths aren’t just for romance. If you have kids, finding time to sneak off to the bathroom to soak in the tub can be difficult. Is there someone in your life you trust to take care of your kids for an hour or so? Ask that person to take the kids out for ice cream or watch them at their house for a while if such a thing is possible then light a few candles, fill your bathtub with bubbles and settle in for a nice relaxing soak in the tub. If you feel like investing a little money in this venture, invest in some bath oils to add to the water than lend themselves to relaxation. Lavender based oils are a good place to start.
04: Cocktail Night with the Girls
Cocktail night with the girls can be a lot of fun but going out can be expensive. Instead of going out to a club or a restaurant for cocktails, ask your friends over to your house for a night of drinks, snacks and fun. Ask everyone who attends to bring their favorite snack and the ingredients for their favorite adult beverage. Serve everyone’s snacks together but serve one cocktail at a time. Start with your favorite (since you’re the host) and then move on to the next person’s favorite. Continue doing this until everyone’s favorite cocktail has been served. Make sure you have ibuprofen and a few multi-vitamins on hand the next morning though as a night like this can easily lead to a far less enjoyable morning. You can find recipes for ten popular mixed drinks here.
03: Movie Night with the Girls
This one works much like cocktail night but with movies instead of alcohol. You can, of course, still have alcohol if you like but if you’re not a big drinker, you can opt for virgin drinks instead. For this one, you’re going to once again ask everyone to bring their favorite snack but this time you’re also going to ask them to bring their favorite movie. This saves you money buying or renting movies and it also lets you get to see what everyone likes. Want to up the fun factor? Have a theme. Some great things for a girls’ movie night include:
- Cult Classics
- Man Candy (where each movie stars someone’s favorite hunky actor)
- Childhood Favorites
- Freight Fest
- Zombie Apocalypse
- Bad Movies
That list is just scratching the surface. You can go with nearly any theme that appeals to you but make sure it’s something that’s also going to appeal to your friends. You can try out a different theme each time you have a movie night with the girls or you can choose one that carries over. Man Candy and Rom-Coms are good for this one. Which theme you choose should be a reflection of your friends. When my girlfriends and I have a movie night, we alternate themes between Cult Classics, Man Candy, Rom-Coms and Zombie Apocalypse.
02: DIY Manicures
Manicures don’t have to be expensive. You can do your own manicures and pedicures at home if you have the right tools – most of which can be purchased relatively inexpensively at department stores or even some discount stores. You can experiment with different colors, designs and themes. You can do them alone or with friends. There are lots of options here. Be creative and have fun. You’re pampering yourself. Try not to take it too seriously. We’re going to talk more about DIY manicures in an upcoming article so make sure you come back for that one.
01: DIY Facials
