WTF Fashion: 15 Crazy Red Carpet Looks

We’ve already talked about 30 of the most stylish stars under 30 in Hollywood but that doesn’t mean there are no super stylish ladies over 30 in the entertainment industry. Of course there all and we’ll be talking about them soon. This list is going to be a little different though. This list is all about one of my favorite fashion movements – a movement I’ve heard referred to as WTF fashion. These are the looks that make you scratch your head and question what exactly a star was thinking when they got dressed that morning or before their big event. The fifteen crazy red carpet looks on this list are beyond questionable fashion choices and wardrobe malfunctions. They were statements – for better or for worse. Enjoy!

15: Celine Dion

Event: Academy Awards
Year: 1999
The shocking thing about this Celine Dion number isn’t so much the tux itself but the fact that she chose to wear it backwards. Had she worn the jacket the other way (the normal way), it would’ve been a great look for her and perhaps been one of my favorite outfits of the Academy Awards that year. Instead, it just looks awkward and unfortunate.

14: Rihanna

Event: Grammy Awards
Year: 2011
I actually quite like this dress but I was definitely in the minority on that one. I think it’s daring and bold but still almost classy in a way. While she’s definitely showing a lot of skin, the soft pink takes away the hardness of what could otherwise be a pretty trashy look. In fairness, I’m not sure there’s another woman in the entertainment industry that could’ve pulled off this look.

13: Pink

Event: Grammy Awards
Year: 2003
Pink is a bold, gutsy woman who has always done things the way she wants to do them and fashion has been no exception. for that reason, it should be no surprise that she has hit the red carpet a time or two wearing outfits that have turned heads. This one though, well, it was a little over the top, even for pink. I still thought the look worked. It was a real display of her own personal style but that doesn’t mean others haven’t tried to rock the same look.

12: Ke$ha

Event: American Music Awards
Year: 2010
When I saw photos of Ke$sha at the American Music Awards in 2010, her look reminded me a lot of Pink’s look from the Grammy’s in 2003. I didn’t love the look on Ke$ha but it did have a sort of “I don’t care if you like me” attitude about it that I respected. I like the fact that it was a sort of dressed up look but all of the little accents and additions was just too distracting from the overall vibe of the outfit to really be considered successful.

11: Traci Bingham

Event: Grammy Awards
Year: 2001
This wouldn’t be shocking at all if Traci were dressing as Jeannie for a costume party but on the red carpet for the Grammy’s? Pretty outrageous. It’s not just the skin. It’s the color. It’s the scarf around the waist – it’s the entire thing combined. She looks fantastic of course, but that’s sort of beside the point. If she was performing at the Grammy’s as someone’s belly dancer, I might feel differently but she wasn’t and I don’t.

10: Margaret Cho

Event: Grammy Awards
Year: 2004
I think what shocks me most about this particular look is that it’s Margaret Cho. I love this woman. I love her like I love puppies, kittens and all things cute and fluffy. I think she’s hilarious and beautiful. I was a little surprised to see her showing this much skin on the red carpet though. Perhaps I just haven’t seen enough red carpet photos of her, but this seems out of character. I don’t care either way. I think she looked great and chose something that still expressed her unique personality. Well played.

09: Lil Kim

Event: MTV Video Music Awards
Year: 1999
I’m quite certain I could fill this whole list with shocking red carpet moments from Lil Kim alone. I really wanted to keep this to one outfit per celebrity but it was hard to with Lil Kim and Lady Gaga (who we’ll talk about later on). I chose this one because it was definitely shocking and outrageous but it also led to one of my favorite VMA moments – Diana Ross jiggling Kim’s breast on stage. Classic VMA moment, classic Lil Kim crazy red carpet fashion.

08: Jennifer Lopez

Event: Grammy Awards
Year: 2000
This dress is a legend. It really is. I’d like to put this higher on the list but in all honesty, it was never really all that shocking to me. I’d seen Rose McGowan at the MTV Video Music Awards to years earlier and Jennifer’s dress just felt a little tame in comparison. The biggest difference between the two is that Rose looked trashy (in a fun sort of way) but Jennifer, despite showing so much skin, looked classy.

07: M.I.A.

Event: Grammy Awards
Year: 2009
Who says maternity wear has to be boring? M.I.A. hit the red carpet at the Grammy Awards ready to go into labor at any moment but refused to let a silly thing like being extremely pregnant get in the way of fashion. Definitely outrageous and eye catching, everyone was talking about her red carpet look the next morning which is probably exactly what she was going for. It was a bold statement very fitting of this very bold artist.

06: Toni Braxton

Event: Grammy Awards
Year: 2001
I know I may be alone here, but I actually really liked this dress type outfit Toni chose for the Grammy’s. A year earlier, Jennifer Lopez hit up the Grammy’s wearing her infamous green Versace. Someone had to try to top it and I’m glad it was Toni. While it was extraordinarily revealing, it still had a somewhat classy feel. I don’t really see what makes this dress so much worse than some of the other dresses we see on the red carpet that show tons of cleavage or side boob.

05: Nicki Minaj

Event: Grammy Awards
Year: 2012
I don’t even know where to start with this one. It didn’t work for me on any level but I have to hand it to Nicki. She managed to be shocking and outrageous without showing even the slightest amount of skin. That alone makes her stand out on this list. Even so … no. Just not a big fan of this look. I actually found it a little boring despite the bold color. Still a gutsy move though even if I wasn’t quite feeling it.

04: Rose McGowan

Event: MTV Video Music Awards
Year: 1998
Simply wearing a revealing outfit wasn’t enough to make this list but yeah, this one’s an exception. I wanted to avoid putting an NSFW tag on this post so I had to find a side view picture of this dress. For that reason alone, this one nearly tops my list of the most shocking red carpet fashions ever. What shocks me most about this ‘dress’? At the time, Miss. McGowan was dating Marilyn Manson, a man known for his shocking wardrobe choices, yet Rose still managed to steal the spotlight. There are many reasons I love Rose McGowan and this is just one example.

03: Bjork

Event: Academy Awards
Year: 2001
People were stunned when legendary oddball, Bjork, sauntered down the red carpet wearing her infamous swan dress. I’m not entirely sure why people were surprised. Perhaps they’d never heard of Bjork and had no idea that this is a lady that has always done things a little differently than the rest of us.  I thought it was a bold and unusual choice which seemed like a perfect fit for bold and unusual Bjork.

02: Cher

Event: Academy Awards
Year: 1985
Leave it to Cher to cash in on a trend twenty-some years before the rest of us. When Cher hit the red carpet in this WTF fashion stunner, heads were turned and all eyes were firmly on her. Lady Gaga? Nicki Minaj? Please. Cher was shocking us with fashion before you were even born – and this is just one example. When it comes to looking fierce, fabulous and a little frightening, Cher was the queen. You best bow down. Even so … there is still one look that tops this one.

01: Lady Gaga

Event: MTV Video Music Awards
Year: 2010
I’m not sure anything will ever top Gaga’s meat dress. In terms of shocking red carpet fashion, this one is pretty much untouchable. It was outrageous, disturbing and very, very ‘Gaga’. By donning raw meat and hitting the red carpet, Mother Monster set the bar so high, it’s hard to imagine she will ever be able to outdo herself. I’m sure I could fill this list with WTF fashions just from Gaga but I wanted to keep it at one entry per celeb and this number was clearly the winner.
